Internationally-based health and addictions specialists, pharmacology researchers, psychologists, physicians, and others in the health and social work fields offer 42 essays addressing a range of topics relevant to anyone working with alcohol-dependent clients or others affected by alcoholism. The first section addresses the present state of alcohol studies, focusing on the social and political history of alcohol use, images of problematic drinking, and classification of alcohol-related problems and dependence. A section on clinical pathology addresses such matters as the molecular basis and metabolic consequences of ethanol metabolism, the neurological consequences of alcohol use, and nutrition and infectious disease. Discussion of genetic predisposition to alcohol dependence and other antecedents of drinking, alcohol problems, and dependence are then covered, followed by coverage of drinking patterns and types of alcohol problems.
