Description: This is an excellent review and reference concerning the anatomy, imaging, and procedural techniques of spine intervention.
Purpose: The author's intent was to combine in a single source the methods for the evaluation and treatment of spine pain. In the expanding treatment of spinal pain, he does an excellent job of bringing together anatomy, imaging, physical exam, and treatment methods for the control and amelioration of spine-based pain.
Audience: This is an excellent book for every level of practitioner. Residents can learn the basics of treatment and evaluation of spine pain. Current practitioners can use this book as a introductory guide for the management and treatment of back pain. J. Kevin McGraw is a respected author with many publications on the use of vertebroplasty for treatment of vertebral compression fractures.
Features: The book starts with an overview of spinal anatomy and the current imaging procedures used to evaluate the spine. With chapters on CT, MRI, and nuclear medicine, the main problem areas of the spine are shown with excellent images. A section regarding the history, physical exam, and medications used for spinal injections precedes excellent chapters on the primary procedures used to treat spinal pain. Chapters in the last section expand on spinal injections, discography, treatment of discogenic back pain, biopsy techniques, vertebroplasty, and transcatheter therapy for tumors.
Assessment: This is an excellent effort to bring together the imaging, history, pharmacology, and interventions for evaluating and treating spine-based pain. It is similar in discussion and scope to Image-Guided Spine Intervention by Fenton and Czervionke (Elsevier, 2003).
