Description: Designed to assist nurses to develop skills for working in a changing healthcare system, this book is an integration of research, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice. This edition includes access to a website with additional resources. I was able to access the ones for an independently taught course, but I was unable to access the resources for a course taught by an instructor.
Purpose: The purpose is "to facilitate the nurse in the management of analyzing the strengths and challenges evident in research projects, quality improvement reports, and published reports/manuscripts."
Audience: The audience is "nurses working in healthcare venues who are motivated to engage in EBP." The editors and contributors are educators.
Features: Among the many features in this book that will assist nurses in understanding these concepts are scenarios, "Think Outside the Box" sections, "Red Flags" points, discussion questions, and multiple-choice questions. Unfortunately, I was unable to find the correct answers for the multiple-choice questions, which means readers are unable to evaluate their responses and hampers mastery of the material. The book does contain a nice glossary of terms.
Assessment: This book is unique in that it combines research, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice. It is easy to understand and would be a good resource for any nurse who desires to better understand the role of research in quality improvement and evidence-based practice. The resources for an independent study course are adequate. This edition includes a reinforcement of the scope of evidence, fundamental concepts of evidence-based research examples, and a chapter on quality, which justify this update.
