Description: This is a guide to orthotics from an occupation-based perspective, but it also may also be used by other healthcare practitioners who participate in the construction and fit of orthoses.
Purpose: The purpose is to present concrete information to help students or practitioners determine appropriate orthotics for clients using evidence-based and occupation-based principles.
Audience: The intended audience is entry-level occupational therapy students and occupational therapy practitioners. The book is appropriate for occupational therapy practitioners at all experience levels who may not deal with orthotics on a consistent basis with their clients. The editors and authors provide current information and use the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process, 3rd edition (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2014) to guide the evaluation and intervention processes.
Features: Three sections frame the chapters of this book, and each chapter contains chapter objectives, an opening scenario, self-quizzes, and chapter review questions. The first section (orthotic foundations) includes six chapters that stress the basis for orthotic evaluation and fabrications. Topics include foundations of orthotics, occupation-based orthotic intervention, orthotic processes, anatomical principles, clinical examination and implications for orthotics, and clinical reasoning for orthotic fabrication. The second section (orthosis for conditions and populations) applies the principles described in section one to more specific client situations. Ten chapters cover specific orthoses for the fingers, thumb, hand, wrist, forearm, and elbow, as well as intervention for nerve injuries, spasticity, older adults, and pediatric populations. The final section (topics related to orthosis) focuses more on upper and lower extremity orthotics as well as ethical considerations related to orthotic provision. The editors and chapter authors are exceptional at illuminating factors that must be considered for provision of orthotic devices. The chapters are clear and articulate the importance of each concept. The answers for self-quizzes, case studies, and laboratory exercises are thorough and provide clear information. Of special note are the evidence-based practice tables throughout the book that provide excellent information. The editors note that expanded video clips, learning activities, and case studies are available through the publisher website.
