About the Author

Patricia Kelly Vana, MSN, RN, earned a Diploma in Nursing from St. Margaret Hospital Schoolof Nursing, Hammond, Indiana; a Baccalaureate in Nursing from DePaul University in Chicago,Illinois; and a Master’s degree in Nursing from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. She is Professor Emeritus, Purdue University Northwest, Hammond, Indiana. She has worked as a staff nurse, head nurse, travel nurse, school nurse, and nurse educator. Patricia has traveledextensively in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, teaching conferences for The Joint Commission, Resource Applications, Pediatric Concepts, and Kaplan, Inc. She currently teaches nationwide National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses® (NCLEX-RN®) review courses for Evolve Testing&Remediation/Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI), Houston, Texas. Patricia now volunteers part-time in a Level One Trauma Center Emergency Room in Oak Lawn, Illinois, half the year. She volunteers part-time in an Emergency Room in Fort Myers, Florida, the other half of the year. She has been a nursing volunteer at the Old Irving Park Free Community Clinic in Chicago, Illinois, and a nursing volunteer at the Gladiolus Free Food Pantry in Fort Myers, Florida, for several years.

Beth A. Vottero, PhD, RN, CNE, earned a baccalaureate degree in liberal studies with a focus in business management from the University of Maine at Presque Isle; a baccalaureate degree in nursing from Valparaiso University; a master’s degree in nursing from University of Phoenix; and a PhD in nursing education from Capella University. Beth currently is an associate professor of nursing at Purdue University Northwest, teaching courses including Evidence-Based Practice and Knowledge Translation at the doctoral level and Informatics as well as theory courses in the Graduate Nurse Educator program. At the undergraduate level, she teaches Quality and Safety for Professional Nursing Practice and Evidence-Based Quality Improvement in the Capstone course.

Carolyn A. Christie-McAuliffe PhD, FNP, is the Central NY Region Co-Chair, New York STate Future of Nursing, and is in private practice.

Description: This book updates the knowledge and skills required of entry-level nurses in each of the six Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) domains.
Purpose: The purpose is to enhance the knowledge of educators, nurses, nurse leaders, and managers in healthcare. The first edition was published in 2014, and with healthcare evolving rapidly and new information being generated all the time, this second edition is needed to account for current trends and practices while maintaining a focus on the fundamentals of quality and safety.
Audience: The book was written for all nurses to enhance their knowledge and competence in quality and safety measures in the clinical setting. It meets the needs of the audience and provides the most current information on the QSEN initiative. Patricia Kelly, MSN, RN, Professor Emeritus, Purdue University Calumet, was Director of Quality Improvement at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics. Beth Vottero, PhD, RN, CNE, is Assistant Professor of Nursing at Purdue University Calumet and a research associate with the Indiana Center for Evidence-Based Practice in Hammond, Indiana, a Joanna Briggs Institute Collaborating Center. She also is an active member of the QSEN academic task force. Features: This book captures the latest evidence-based trends and practices approved by all the major quality and safety agencies. Throughout the book, the authors use a variety of resources to meet the objectives and address current trends and practices, including case studies, evidence from literature, critical thinking points, practice questions for each chapter, and a glossary. The clinical case studies paint a vivid picture of quality and safety education for nurses. The black-and-white pictures did not enhance the reading experience.
Assessment: This updated edition captures the trending evidence-based quality and safety issues in healthcare and most definitely justifies replacing the first edition.
