Description: This is a down and dirty guide to the culture of the operating room. The authors do a great job of describing the perioperative area, which is hard to explain to those who have never been there. The photos are realistic and, as they say, a picture is worth 1,000 words.
Purpose: The authors note that the OR personalities, the rapid movement, and the high expectations of all involved make for an environment of "keep quiet and stand in corner." The intent of the book is to open the OR to those on the outside and make it an environment where questions are expected and accepted for the benefit of all involved. These are very worthy objectives, and the book presents the perioperative environment in a way that readers can grasp the culture and find a place. The book meets the objectives in an informative and entertaining way.
Audience: The intended audience are those learners on the outside of the OR double doors. I interpret this as nurses who are not experienced OR nurses, as well as student nurses, advanced practice nurses, scrub techs, or student scrub techs. The audience could also include those in non-nursing healthcare administration positions. The authors and contributors are credible, but I would have preferred to see more of the nurse authors with CNOR credentials.
Features: The book presents a complete picture of the perioperative arena. It is divided into the three relevant areas: preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative, so readers can follow the journey of the patient and see how steps build on one another to achieve safe, quality patient care. The information is offered in an entertaining but truthful way, and it helps put OR concepts and team members in a context that an outsider can grasp. The line and tube chapter, dancing around the room, and distractions and interruptions in the OR are unique presentations of important topics. I commend the authors for the particular focus on safety aspects. OR safety is of the utmost importance and hard to understand at times, but the authors hit the key issues such as positioning, counts, the surgical field, and then tie it all together in the chapter on patient safety in the OR chapter.
Assessment: As an OR nurse who teaches a perioperative class, I found this book invaluable. It is a candid, entertaining explanation of the culture of the OR. There are more through books, such as Alexander's Care of the Patient in Surgery, 15th edition, Rothrock (Elsevier, 2014) and Berry and Kohn's Operating Room Technique, 13th edition, Phillips (Elsevier, 2016), but they are academic and leave readers wondering what the OR is really all about. I am considering adding this to the reference list for my perioperative elective course. I think students will find it useful and calming before their clinical experiences. It also could be used as a recruitment tool for nursing students who wish to explore being an OR nurse.
