Description: Reflecting the recent publication of the DSM-5, this is an update of a comprehensive introduction to the field of psychiatry. The previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose: The authors strive to provide a tool to help readers understand the basic principles of psychiatry.
Audience: The primary audience is medical students and psychiatry residents, but the authors note that nursing students and social workers can also benefit from this book.
Features: The book has been reorganized to follow the pattern of the DSM-5, presenting information along the developmental lifespan in three parts. Part I reviews changes to the DSM, the basics of interviewing, and the neurobiology and genetics of mental illness. Part II reviews different psychiatric disorders from pediatric to geriatric populations. Part III includes topics such as treatment modalities and legal issues. Each chapter contains clinical vignettes, helpful charts and tables with the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, and self-assessment questions. The book ends with a bibliography, glossary, and index. However, there are no answers for the self-assessment questions, it is very difficult to use the bibliography because it does not directly correlate with specific chapters, and the glossary would be more helpful if the words it defines were highlighted in the text.
Assessment: This book has a 20-year tradition of being one of the most recommended introductory textbooks of psychiatry. It is one of the most efficient textbooks, is the most often recommended by psychiatrists teaching medical students and residents, and is best used as a tool while working with psychiatric patients. This edition does an excellent job of incorporating the changes in the DSM-5.
