Overview

Isak Dinesen earned international fame for Seven Gothic Tales and Out of Africa, and other stories that skillfully combine elements of fable, social conflict, and psychological drama. She was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize. Yet the story of her life-her travels, affairs, and friendships-remains the greatest story of all. Christened with the name Karen, the moody, headstrong, youngest of three sisters was nicknamed "Tanne" for much of her childhood. She was determined to become an artist. After she married Baron Blixen, she was the mistress and landowner "Tania" to those she knew and loved in her new African home. Finally, it was with the name "Isak" meaning "one who laughs" that she became known to the world as a master storyteller. Each period of her life provided Dinesen with rich characters and horizons for her brilliant writing. Noted biographer and critic Judith Thurman draws on Isak Dinesen's letters, unpublished manuscripts, and family documents in this compelling biography. Winner of the National Book Award, Isak Dinesen gracefully reveals the connections between a remarkable woman's literary creations and her fascinating life.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This, like the best biographies, is a book in which the reader can live.” —Margaret Drabble, The New York Times Book Review

“Splendid, inestimably valuable . . . I cannot imagine that it will be supplanted. Right now it is the essential book on Isak Dinesen.” —Chicago Tribune Book World

“Absorbing biography . . . This is a gothic tale worthy of the author of Seven Gothic Tales.” —Victoria Glendinning, The Washington Post Book World

NOV/DEC 97 - AudioFile

Engaging and scholarly, Thurman’s biography is a rich portrait of the famed author’s life and works. Thurman cites personal letters, family documents and unpublished manuscripts in an effort to give an inside view of Isak Dinesen’s family, friends and lifestyle. Davina Porter skillfully navigates the text, carrying listeners from turn-of- the-century Denmark to pre-WWII Africa. Listening to Porter is like hearing an aristrocratic grand dame reminisce about a personal friend over tea. Her narrative style epitomizes the grace, polish and eloquence of Dinesen’s own writings. The reading is always consistent. Pacing is smooth, clear and thoughtful, allowing listeners to gain intimacy with the subject without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
