Overview

Italian Poetry 19501990 by Gayle Ridinger and Gian Paolo Renello, Paperback ISBN 9780937832349 $18.95; E-Book ISBN 9780937832202

This bilingual anthology encompasses work by three generations of poets. It is intended to introduce readers and students to both experimental and more traditional currents of Italian poetry during the second half of the last century. The first generation (poets born before 1935) includes such names as Nobel Prize winner Eugenio Montale and Pier Paolo Pasolini, together with avant-garde poets like Andrea Zanzotto and Edoardo Sanguineti. The poetry of the second generation (born between 1935 and 1945) reveals a clear need to come to terms with the radical experimentation of the past; included are the late Antonio Porta and Nanni Cagnone. The section dedicated to the youngest generation (those born after 1945) features poets ranging from Valerio Magrelli to the leader of the neo-neo-avant-garde, Lello Voce. It also includes selections of prose poetry representative of the recent exploration of directions pioneered by Dino Campana. The strong work of six female poets, two per generation, will hopefully right the impression that contemporary Italian poetry is predomi-nantly a male concern. The anthology also provides readers with a general introduction and a bio-bibliographical note on each poet.

"Ridinger's translations are attentive to individual poetic voices. In all, this is a major step toward bringing these important and inventive voices to American readers in a single volume. Recommended for public and academic literary collections." LIBRARY JOURNAL, April 1, 1996.
