About the Author

JANE CARNEY SCHULZE, Ph.D. is a faculty member in Sociology at San Diego State University, Department of Sociology, and Southwestern College in the Department of Child Development. She has been a teacher in preschools through college for the past 43 years. She has counseled diverse families with children of all ages and consulted with various programs such as Head Start, the California Council on Wellness and Physical Fitness, the YMCA and public and private schools. She co-founded two preschools for children with emotional-behavioral problems, working with the community, parents, and professionals. She has written and spoken extensively on family issues in the U.S. as well as internationally, and was named North American Coordinator for the United Nations' International Year of the Family, 1994. She continues to be active in promoting Parenting Education classes in public and private schools. She and her husband, Rolf, reside in San Diego, California, where they enjoy quality time with their children and grandchildren.
ROLF SCHULZE, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Sociology at San Diego State University, pioneered a course in Human Sexuality in the Department of Sociology in the early 1970's, which he continued to teach for 25 years. He has published in the area of Sexuality, Social Psychology, and Political Sociology. He continues to teach a popular course in Contemporary Social Problems and is active in the community. He has extensive international experience, having both lived, studied, lectured, and researched abroad.
