Seeing yourself within a book matters. Sadly, as an expert in diversity, studies have shown that only 5% of children's books depict Latinx characters. As a Clinical Psychologist (from a mixed-race background) I cannot recommend this uplifting work of art more highly. The author gracefully weaves a powerful message of inclusion with an awe-inspiring celebration of Mexican geography and cultures. The stunning illustrations bring the deeply meaningful messages alive. This team clearly understands the importance of authentic representation of ALL children in literature. Books play an essential role in how children see themselves and how they imagine others will view them. Jaguars and Butterflies will leave children, particularly girls with Mexican heritage, with feelings of worth, strength, power, and confidence. It will leave all of its readers with a deep sense of respect and insight. Given that children notice race from as young as two and can show signs of prejudice by age three, this unique book is highly relevant for children of all ages. The practical suggestions for parents also enhance the impact of Jaguars and Butterflies, making it a truly interactive and highly educational experience. This is essential reading for children at a time when celebrating diversity could not be more important.
