Overview

The fifth volume in Blues Images' series of 1920s blues sides, this one features a striking version of Ma Rainey singing the heart out of "Deep Moaning Blues" and a vigorous "The New Shake That Thing" from the Mississippi Sheiks as well as a couple of obscure tracks each from Blind Willie McTell and Blind Blake, but for the most part, what is here is fairly run of the mill stuff from the era, and while it's certainly interesting, a certain sameness starts to creep in as the sequence proceeds. The Ma Rainey track, though, is worth the price of a ticket. ~ Steve Leggett
