Overview

When Joseph Smith commented on the Apocrypha (Book of Jasher), in the Doctrine and Covenants, Chapter 91, 1 "There are many things contained therein that are true, and is mostly translated correctly." 2 "There are many things contained therein that are not true, which are interpolations by the hands of men." 6 "Therefore it is not needful that it (Apocrypha) should be translated." Joseph Smith probably read the entire Apocrypha (Book of Jasher) when he translated the Golden Plates (Book of Mormon). In the Book of Jasher, the additions to the Book, after it was originally written, are not limited to, "It is written in the Book of Law from God." (Jasher 82:20), "They are written in the Book of the Law of God, that he gave to the children of Israel by Moses." (Jasher 87:8), and "As it is written in the law of Moses." (Jasher 88:11). Joseph Smith received the Golden Plates from the angel Moroni on September 22, 1827. From December 1827 to June 1828, Joseph Smith finished dictating 116 manuscript pages from the 1st book in the Golden Plates (Book of Mormon) to Martin Harris. The partial 116 manuscript pages was the first book translated in the Book of Mormon. Smith lent the 116 unduplicated manuscript pages to Harris because he had to convince his wife (Lucy Harris) that they were translating an ancient book of scriptures. When Smith lent the 116 pages to Harris, his wife must have read them. Whatever was in the lost 116 manuscript pages, must have been more than humans could comprehend or accept at the time of its translation. All we do know about the lost manuscript pages, is a reference about the walls surrounding Jerusalem (?) by Emma Smith, probably the walls of the city that the children of Chittim lived in (Jasher 17:12), or the walls surrounding the cities that Jacob's sons attacked. Harris' wife was probably so upset from the information in the manuscript, she probably destroyed the manuscript pages in the fire. After this, Lucy Harris gave Joseph Smith $28 or $270 ($28 in 1913 with inflation = $773.72 today) to help in the translation of the Golden Plates. She said she had a dream where she was shown the Golden Plates and was told how important the translation of the plates was. The 116 unduplicated manuscript pages were probably a partial translation of the Book of Jasher, found in the first book of the Golden Plates (Book of Mormon). When Nephi and his brothers left Jerusalem, Lehi told Nephi that God wanted them to go back to Jerusalem. They were told to get the brass plates from Laban. The brass plates were very important records. The brass plates contained the history of mankind since Adam. Between July and September 1828, the angel Moroni took the golden plates and the Urim and Thummim from Smith, as a penalty for giving the manuscript to a wicked man. Moroni returned the golden plates and the Urim and Thummin to Smith on September 22, 1828, the anniversary of the day when he first received them. Smith dictated the words on the golden plates while peering into the seer stones of the Urim and Thummim, which allowed him to see the English translation. When Smith looked through the stones, the written translation of the ancient reformed Egyptian script appeared to him in English. Smith, Martin Harris, and Oliver Cowdery completed the translation of the golden plates in early July, 1829. The Book of Mormon was published in March 1830. When the Book of Jasher was published in 1840, Joseph Smith (1805-1844) referenced it in the Doctrine and Covenants as the Apocrypha. Apocrypha means, writings not included in the Book of Mormon. When Joseph Smith read the Book of Jasher (1840) translation, he recognized the mistakes in the translation after already translating 116 pages of it. The story of the lost 116 manuscript pages is, they were a translation of the Book of Lehi. The first three books in the Book of Mormon are the three Books of Nephi.
