Overview

Pianist Ralph Sutton's first recording as a leader in five years, and one of only three he made during 1955-67, was recorded at Squaw Valley before the 1960 Winter Olympics. The obscure trumpeter Ernie Figueroa fares well on the quartet date with bassist Vernon Alley and drummer Joe Dodge, but it is Sutton who is consistently the main star. Quite a few of the song titles have something to do with the weather (including "Winter Wonderland," "Button Up Your Overcoat" and "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm"), but all have viable chord changes for Sutton to romp over. This little-known LP is worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow
