CHAPTER 1

"Your dog, Dolly, has cancer of the lungs."

I can't believe my ears.

This can't be happening. I know the "C-word" all too well.

I glare at my mom. "This must be a really bad joke."

The veterinarian starts showing us x-rays on his computer.

Everything becomes a blur.

Nearby voices are suddenly distant.

Memories of my own diagnosis come flooding through ...

"Your body has a disease called cancer, Jenny," a Pediatrician had said.

Mom and Dad sobbed quietly.

I stared at the beautiful pictures of horses on the wall.

I had no idea what he was talking about.

"There are cells that are hurting your stomach," the children's doctor explained.

"We will fight cancer with chemotherapy," Dad said with his hand on top of mine.

"Chemotherapy ..."

"Weekly hospital visits ..."

"Rest ..."

Adults are still talking.

"Is Dolly going to vomit from treatment?" I blurt out.

"No," the animal specialist says.

I glare at him now. "Will Dolly live forever?"

The Animal Specialist takes off his glasses. "Nobody or nothing lives forever, Jenny."

"But ... but ... I thought chemotherapy fights cancer."

"Doctors try to cure people of cancer with chemotherapy," he explains. "Animal Specialists, like me, try to make a furry friend's life more comfortable."

I jump out of my seat. "HOW UNFAIR!"

I run out of the Animal Hospital. Cold air hits my face.

Mom comes after me.

"Get inside the car, Jenny."

I'm tempted to kick the car door with my hard boot, but I don't.

Instead, I do what I'm told.
