About the Author

Deborah Dang, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, is Director of Nursing Practice, Education, and Research at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. She developed the hospital's strategic vision for EBP and built an infrastructure that has enabled the transformation to practice based on evidence.

Sandra L. Dearholt, MS, RN, NEA-BC, is Assistant Director of Nursing for the Neuroscience and Psychiatry Nursing departments at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. She has extensive experience in development and delivery of EBP educational programs.

Description: The authors have consulted with many nursing leaders to provide perspectives and important themes for the 11 chapters in the third edition of this book, which continues to be dedicated to the translation of evidenced-based practice into quality patient care.
Purpose: The purpose is to continue to help frontline nurses translate evidence into practice. The book is intended to inform nurses with feedback of experiences from other healthcare workers of how this evidence-based practice model is applied in real life situations. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a core competency for all healthcare professionals and that is clear in the book.
Audience: The audience is nurses in both education and practice settings. The EBP process is explained and intended for nurses with a variety of education backgrounds. The two primary authors represent seasoned and contemporary nursing leaders with extensive experience in the development and delivery of EBP. Contributing authors broaden the perspective of research and EBP.
Features: The authors address EBP and conceptualize the John Hopkins Nursing EBP model. The book starts with background EBP, followed by information on the model and guidelines, and, finally, a large section on translation of the evidence. The authors provide excellent information about use of the model. The use of real-life exemplars is great for further implementation of applying research to practice. The various fonts, use of italics, boxes, tables, and figures help readers visualize the use of the model and studies.
Assessment: This book provides a platform for nurses in education and practice to translate the high quality of evidence into practice. Nurses are valued as a professional group with the power and influence to change the world, especially with the spirit of inquiry. The future of nursing, regardless of the practice setting, depends on meaningful translation of evidence into practice.
