Josie - An East Anglian Childhood Remembered
Josie was born into a working class family living in East Anglia, and her story encapsulates the history of this area from 1930 through to the end of the Second World War.
At that time childhood was innocent and simple, with Josie able to roam free and go for bicycle rides all day without worrying her parents. Holidays were a week in Yarmouth, Saturday afternoons could be spent at the picture matinees and the trams rumbled down the street. Life had a certainty about it and, although not wealthy, people enjoyed their activities contentedly, without relying on material possessions.
All this was to change when war shattered these simple pleasures: Food and clothes became rationed, Josies eldest brother was drafted into the army, regular air-raids left Norwich, Yarmouth and Lowestoft extensively bomb damaged, and eventually Edwin, Josies own sweetheart of five years, volunteered for the navy.
Josies experiences are interwoven with the historic events of the time, and the arrival of the Yanks opens another chapter of her life. Their blend of light relief, together with ample supplies of candy, stockings and chewing gum, brought a little cheer to a population starved of such luxuries. For Josie they brought Rex, a tall, shy American soldier, and he became part of the biggest dilemma of her young life . . . the choice between her long-time sweetheart Edwin, or a new life in America.
