It seems like a no-brainer: milk comes from cows (and other animals). But the journey from cow to drinkable ice-cold deliciousness is a little more complicated. This title in the Journey of A . . . series breaks the process down, from cows chomping on grass to milking parlors to collection and the dairy. From there the book explains how cardboard and plastic milk cartons are produced, before following their journey to stores. Vocabulary words are bolded throughout, and photographs of cows and machinery are helpfully labeled, with the exception of a few obvious ones (“People like to drink milk”). A particularly interesting fact is illustrated in an 11-step diagram on the last page: “It takes just two days for the milk to travel from a cow to your glass.” A concluding quiz tests reading comprehension. - Ann Kelley Booklist 10/1/2012
