Overview

J.R. Bartlett and the Captive Girl is an action-packed, inspirational historical novel based on the journals of John Russell Bartlett, a Providence, Rhode Island bookstore owner and linguist charged with surveying the new boundary line between Mexico and the United States from 1850-1853.

J.R. Bartlett and the Captive Girl traces the true story of Bartlett's politically, physically and emotionally treacherous route though the unknown lands of today's New Mexico and Southern Arizona; the challenges, conflicts and joy he experienced during the perilous journey to take a beautiful Mexican girl, Inez Gonzales--an Apache captive whom he rescued from traders--home to her family, a disturbing reunion at the Tubac Presidio and their continuing connection for many years.

A timely and inspirational love story that needs to be retold! Their 1851 journey tells of the challenges and choices we face today when transcending artificial boundaries that keep us apart. Relevant to US /Mexico border and immigration issues, J.R. Bartlett and the Captive Girl brings back to life real historical figures who had the courage to cross lines to keep love alive!

About the Author

Former journalist with the Green Valley News and editor of the now defunct Santa Cruz Valley Sun monthly magazine focusing on the heritage, habitat and happenings of the region, Nancy established a reputation as a journalist reflecting the soul of the region.

Her book, “300 Years of Tubac Times—Writings, Illustrations and Recollections of Those Who Lived Tubac from 1691 to 2002 ” is a compilation of first person narratives by Tubac residents (including her own ) recalling their Tubac experiences. The book is regarded as a “must read” for history buffs and newcomers to the region.

Her property management and maintenance business—Tubac Historic Properties, LLC—has been a vehicle for Nancy to indulge her passion of fostering and enhancing the tradition of “Tubac: Where Art and History Meet” through restoration projects of historic adobe buildings, renovations, development and management of properties housing working artists, including her most recent endeavor—the Lowe House Project—an artist-in-residency program for emerging artists.
