Description: This review book is the ideal companion to the authors' Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, 13th edition (McGraw-Hill, 2015), which is the most popular textbook for teaching pharmacology to medical students and other health professionals.
Purpose: The purpose is "to help students review pharmacology to prepare for both regular course examinations and board examinations." The long-term popularity of the materials prepared by these authors for teaching pharmacology attests to the high value of these learning tools.
Audience: The book is appropriate for medical and pharmacology students, but is widely used by many health professionals who must master pharmacology for curriculum or certification examinations.
Features: This review follows, chapter-by-chapter, the organization of the parent textbook, which is similar to the organization of many reputable pharmacology books. Each chapter has a concise discussion of the main concepts that underlie the basic principles and drug groups covered in the chapter. The book also includes important explanatory, well-designed, multicolor figures from the main textbook plus some new figures. The drug summary tables are outstanding, consolidating much factual information required for success on examinations. Each drug-oriented chapter begins with an overview that organizes drug groups in a tree-diagrammatic format. Most chapters have a list of high yield terms to learn, a "Still Keeper" prompt, practice sample questions with explanations, a checklist of focused facts, and, most importantly, excellent summary tables of the most important drugs covered in the chapter providing key information on mechanism of action, effects, clinical uses, pharmacokinetics, drug-drug interactions, and toxicities. Appendix I details strategies for preparing for comprehensive examinations, appendix II is a tabular list of key words for key drugs, and appendixes III and IV each include 100-question practice examinations, which include explanations. My only slight criticism is that the clarity and format of some questions could be improved to more closely reflect the style of questions that appear on many certification examinations.
Assessment: Students have many learning resources to choose from to help them prepare for pharmacology questions on curricular and certification examinations. The learning resources from these authors are among the best.
