Despite some subgenres coming and going within the realm of heavy metal, one style that you can always count on -- and seems will never fade away -- is good old-fashioned extreme metal. You know the style we're talking about -- growled vocals,
Iron Maiden-esque guitar harmonies, rapid-fire riffs, and drum blasts, etc. Case in point,
Woe of Tyrants'
Kingdom of Might. Despite it being the group's debut effort (and released in 2009), this album could have easily been released in the late '80s or early '90s, and you wouldn't know the difference, as evidenced by such intense thrashings as
"Soli Deo Gloria" and the title track (which there are actually two of -- each differentiated by the subtitles
"The Eclipse" and
"Dawn in the Darkness"). While there's not a lot new metallic ground being broken here, for fans of vintage death metal,
Woe of Tyrants may soon be your favorite new band. ~ Greg Prato
