Thanks to a misleading title and less than accessible presentation, this compilation from crafter and first-time author Bartlette will frustrate some knitters, though others will appreciate the appealing patterns it contains. Created by a variety of experienced designers and representing many styles of lacework, the projects range from relatively simple patterns for scarves, wraps, and tote bags, to more elaborate ones for lacy sweaters and vests. As a rule, though, following the instructions requires advanced skills and an ability to read knitting charts. Though the projects were chosen to work well with non-woolen fibers—cotton, linen, hemp, and silk, among others—the book contains no detailed information about plant-based fibers, such as an introduction or glossary might have provided. Nor is there any information in the patterns themselves, which are only organized by project type, requiring knitters to scrutinize each carefully to determine what kind of yarn is recommended. Advanced and master knitters seeking new challenges or the perfect pattern for a recently purchased specialty yarn will be delighted with the projects here, but beginners or those looking for tips on working with non-wool fibers will be disappointed.
