Description: This is the third edition of a book that covers primary bone marrow, lymph node, and splenic pathology as well as involvement of these neoplasms in other organs. The second edition was published in 2001.
Purpose: This update is necessary to incorporate the new WHO classification system, the expansion of monoclonal antibodies, and the explosion in molecular biology and genetics related to these hematopathological disorders since the previous edition was published.
Audience: The audience is medical professionals, including medical students, residents, and attending physicians, who have a particular interest in neoplastic hematopathology. This is a great reference for readers with a wide range of knowledge, from medical students wanting a reference on specific hematopathological diseases to practicing hematopathologists faced with diagnostic dilemmas in day to day practice. The authors are well known in the field.
Features: The book covers everything from normal hematopoiesis to lymphoma (B and T cell neoplasms) to acute leukemias to myeloproliferative neoplasms to rare disorders including histiocytic and mastocytic neoplasms. The best part of the book is the chapter format that includes background information, epidemiology, clinical features, morphology, immunophenotype, molecular aberrations, and most importantly differential diagnoses for each entity. The abundant images are of high quality and adequately labeled, which is difficult when taking images at such high power.
Assessment: This is a wonderfully written reference for any medical professional with an interest in hematological malignancy. It is more detailed than other books in this area. Due to the abundance of new information about molecular alterations in hematological malignancy and the new WHO classification, this edition filled an important void.
