Overview

Knuckle and Potty are tired of being lovable book characters. Together, they hatch a plan to venture to the Outer-world by clicking their heels and leaping off the pages into real life to confront the author and illustrator who created them. When that plan fails, a trip to Happy World is their last option. Simple: they'll just erase Happy World with their de-zonker contraptions. Little do Knuckle and Potty know that Happy World isn't as happy as they think.

James Proimos is the author and illustrator of the Johnny Mutton series as well as When Guinea Pigs Fly. He has also created shows for Cartoon Network, and lives in Baltimore, Maryland.

James Proimos is a well-known author, illustrator, and cartoonist. He began his career in advertising and has won many awards, including several Cleos. He lives in Baltimore, with his wife and children. He is the author and illustrator of Knuckle and Potty Destroy Happy World and is the author of 12 Things to Do Before You Crash and Burn.

Knuckle, a pink tiger, and his good friend, Potty, a green bear, have grown tired of being cute and adorable in this fun, goofy children’s book. It’s actually a book within a book—Knuckle and Potty are characters in other (madeup) children’s books and are humiliated by how adorable they are. It gets worse for them—their next book is going to be Tiger and Bear Go to Happy World, something they just can’t stomach, so they make attempts to either escape the book world entirely or to destroy Happy World. This imaginative and humorous story is something of a chapter book/graphic novel hybrid. The mix and match of prose and comics works just fine and is a unique way of telling the story. Author Proimos has created shows for Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, and his whimsy and humor show that he has a knack for funny, child-friendly storytelling. Ages 7–10. (May)

Two cutesy-poo picture-book characters seek (and find) a way to toughen up their images. Chafing at the roles forced on them in previous bestsellers with titles like Tiger and Bear Are Cute and Tiger and Bear Are Wholesome, Knuckle Tiggerelli and Potty Polarberg seek help to escape their upcoming outing, Tiger and Bear Go to Happy World. Appeals to their author (who turns out to be not the TV celebrity named on their title pages, but a ghost writer named Gregory) and illustrator get only hostile responses. Knuckle and Potty (respectively, small pink and green outline figures with oversized eyes and lashes) arm themselves with erasers and mount a direct assault on Happy World's trees and flowers. Alas, these turn out to be less defenseless than their sappy smiles imply. Proimos cranks up the general air of chaos by mixing narrative text with loosely drawn framed and unframed cartoon scenes and trots in other stars of page and screen. Such lights as Winkie the Pug and the rhyme-spouting Chicken in the Beret lend aid and advice. A knee-slapper for recent early-reader grads who like their metafiction on the droll side.
