Overview

Una giovane donna, Elinor Carlisle, siede sul banco degli imputati, accusata di assassinio. Le prove a suo carico sono schiaccianti. La vittima, Mary Gerrard, dama di compagnia di una sua anziana e ricca zia morta in circostanze poco chiare, ha sottratto all'accusata l'amore del fidanzato, l'affetto della zia e forse anche l'eredità. L'omicidio, per avvelenamento da morfina, è avvenuto durante una colazione alla quale partecipano solo tre persone: la vittima, Elinor e una vecchia, irreprensibile infermiera. Tutti sono convinti della colpevolezza dell'imputata.
