This book analyses different forms of relations between labourers and employers in rural areas, and the bases of such relations, in order to show how the various forms of labour relations are used as mechanisms of control and as a means of exploitation by the employers in rural areas of Bangladesh. The book also investigates how the labourer-employer relationship changes over time and the implications of these changes by analysing tenurial relations, various types of labour relations (including migration) and state intervention.

Based on his experience working with several rural development and water management projects in the country, Datta demonstrates the ambiguities and limitations of applying rigid theoretical concepts in defining labor, particularly in a South Asian agrarian economy. He finds that sources of labor are not uniform, and that labor in a rural context is not a homogeneous commodity. He suggests that a critical analysis of the economic and political relations that bind workers into the same processes of production and reproduction is needed.
