Coe Professorship in Nephrolithiasis Research in Mineral Metabolism and is Chief in the Section of Nephrology in the Veterans Affairs North Texas Health Care System; and Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the Charles and Jane Pak Center for Mineral Metabolism and Clinical Research, The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

Mark A. Perazella, MD, FACP, is Associate Professor of Medicine, Director of the Renal Fellowship Program, and Director of Acute Dialysis Services in the Section of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, Yale University School of Medicine.

Edited by experts in the field, this concise review of the facts in physiology and pathophysiology is presented in bullet format and tables useful as a quick reference for individuals familiar with the topics or for healthcare professionals trying to acquire a basic understanding without getting overwhelmed with information.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a reference and easy to understand framework for the evaluation of commonly seen acid-base, fluid, and electrolyte abnormalities without going into as much detail as in medical textbooks. The book meets, and often exceeds, the objectives by providing a comprehensive tool that focuses on the core messages needed to properly assess patients in clinical practice.
Audience: The target audience includes medical providers at all levels (from student to senior faculty) taking care of patients with simple or complex disorders of acid-base, fluids, and electrolytes or anyone interested in an easy to access review of the (patho)physiology of the electrolyte homeostasis. It also appears to be a very useful resource for trainees in various subspecialties including intensive care medicine and nephrology. The authors are well known and published experts in the field.
