Overview

Operative urology has evolved in recent years to include laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgical procedures, which have resulted in significant improvements in quality of life-related outcome. Nevertheless, training methods in urologic laparoscopy and robot-assisted surgery vary considerably, and a structured training scheme is required to enable the modern urologist to adapt to and make optimal use of these techniques. Accordingly, the main goal of this surgical atlas is to guide the urologist carefully through all the standard laparoscopic and robot-assisted procedures. Each procedure is presented in detail with numerous supporting endoscopic images and diagrams. The reader is thereby acquainted with the different surgical steps and will acquire the knowledge necessary for reliable reproduction of the techniques in clinical practice.

Description: This well-organized book describes and illustrates over 45 different extirpative and reconstructive urologic surgeries that can be completed laparoscopically or with laparoscopic robot assistance. The three editors are well-known, well-published laparoscopic surgeons and the 74 contributors represent institutions on three continents.
Purpose: The purpose was to provide a comprehensive atlas of laparoscopic and robot-assisted procedures using step-by-step descriptions of technique. The book accomplishes this goal with several hundred laparoscopic surgical photos and illustrations displaying the various steps of each procedure.
Audience: Residents, fellows, beginning laparoscopic surgeons, and laparoscopic experts can all gain valuable information from this book. It provides very basic information, such as trocar placement and methods of laparoscopic access (transperitoneal and retroperitoneal). It also includes more sophisticated procedural points in order to enhance the experience of already seasoned surgeons.
Features: The book is thoughtfully organized into five sections: upper urinary tract procedures (kidney, ureter and adrenal gland); lymphadenectomy; lower urinary tract procedures (bladder and prostate); pediatric urology; and miscellaneous procedures. Each section has multiple subsections with chapters on fundamental issues such as patient positioning, trocar placement, and positioning of the robot, if applicable. In many cases, both transperitoneal and retroperitoneal approaches for a given procedure are displayed. The numerous illustrations include three dimensional photos of patient positions, pictures of surgical instruments and trocars, and operative, step-by-step photos that walk readers through the actual surgery. Step one of each procedure is uniform throughout the book, and is a template illustration depicting trocar placement in relation to standard anatomic landmarks. Each procedure is prefaced with a brief introduction, list of surgical indications/contraindications, and description of any preoperative preparation.
Assessment: This is an excellent surgical atlas for both novice and advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgeons. It is comprehensive and well organized and illustrated. It should be a welcome addition to any laparoscopic surgeon's collection of operative manuals.
