This book is designed specifically to help equip new surgeons with the anatomical and technical knowledge to supplement hands on experience in minimally invasive colon and rectal surgery. There are multiple colorectal surgeries which distinctly lend themselves to the use of the laparoscopic approach. To assist the junior surgeon who is embarking on a career in surgery, expert surgeons and educators in the field of colon and rectal surgery from around the country authored the chapters included in this book. Chapters describe key elements of each surgery, including the order of surgery, when and how the surgeon created tension, rotated the patient, and optimized flow of the surgery. Chapters also contain tips and pitfalls that are not always explicitly presented when describing a surgical approach in order to provide readers with a diverse toolkit. Each chapter is also full of new illustrations that show the direction of traction, the line of dissection, and the anatomy of the colon.The illustrations also present tools in a color-coded format to clearly distinguish between the surgeon’s and the assistant’s tools.

Description: This book is a step-by-step guide to laparoscopic colectomy. Each chapter covers indications, preoperative planning, steps of the operation, and necessary tools, but the primary portion of the chapters focuses on the logistics of optimally performing the steps of the procedure. Tips and pitfalls are emphasized in boxes and color images highlight anatomy and maneuvers.
Purpose: This book fulfills the purpose as stated in the title: it is a step-by-step guide to laparoscopic colectomy. It tackles a challenging topic of translating what is taught in the operating room into text and images. Few books currently in publication describe the required laparoscopic maneuvers in as much detail. Additionally, this book addresses numerous methods to overcome challenges encountered during the procedure.
Audience: As stated in the preface, this book is targeted to junior attendings, walking the readers through each of the major categories of laparoscopic colonic resections. The authors and contributors are well-recognized experts in colorectal surgery.
Features: The beginning of each chapter for each type of laparoscopic colectomy demonstrates room setup and patient and surgeon positioning. Nearly every page has a highlighted tip or pitfall with pearls of wisdom on anatomic variations, maximizing traction, instrument choice, camera tips, and exposure. Helpful color images illustrate the vascular and lymphatic anatomy, demonstrate the laparoscopic instruments, are color-coded to denote the primary or assistant surgeon, and display arrows to indicate the direction of traction or dissection. Additionally, there are chapters that focus specifically on the tools needed for laparoscopic colectomy, mobilization of the splenic flexure, laparoscopic lysis of adhesions, and management of complications associated with these procedures. The chapter on laparoscopic mobilization of the splenic flexure highlights four different approaches to mobilizing the flexure as well as sections on how to determine if you have complete mobilization and lengthening procedures if you still need more reach. While there are many other ways to perform these laparoscopic procedures, this volume concisely covers the most used methods and comments on additional accepted methods.
Assessment: This book is succinct, easy to read, and focuses on the tips and techniques typically thought of as only learned in the operating room. It is a great investment for surgical residents who want to shine and junior attendings who want to re-read pearls of advice before their cases.
