El libro fue publicado en Inglaterra el 14 de octubre de 1892 por George NewnesLtd y en una edición EE.UU. el 15 de octubre de Harper. El plazo inicial de impresióncombinada fue 14.500 copias.
El libro fue prohibido en la Unión Soviética en 1929, para el ocultismo de su autor,aunque el libro muestra pocos signos de ese material. Más tarde, el embargo fuelevantado.
