About the Author

G. Pope Atkins is professor of political science at the United States Naval Academy. He has lived and worked in Argentina and Ecuador and has been a visiting scholar at the Brookings Institution, the Institute of Latin American Studies at the University of London, the Fondo para el Avance de las Ciencias Sociales in Santo Domingo, and the international relations department at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He has also been a senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. Dr. Atkins has written extensively on Latin American international and comparative politics, including two books on the Dominican Republic.
