This was just the book I needed (as someone who has been in middle management for a while, but feeling stuck. Mid life!). This book separates itself from other leadership books in the author's relatable style and inspirational life story. It strikes a nice balance between research and principals of leadership while also compelling you to look at your own life, passion and story. It feels like the leader's version of "The Artist's Way." The fantastic part about this book is that I can see it being really helpful to not only adult leaders in their respective fields, but also to high school students who may not even necessarily be identified as "leaders".

Someone who means a lot to me recommended Leader by Choice. Against what I thought was my better judgement at the time, I am glad I bought the paperback, because I can’t tell you how many lines and pages that I marked and folded to come back to, and read over and over again.
Andres Valdes has authored not just another boring self help book that you forget about the first time you set it down. The author draws wisdom from a plethora of great books which are mentioned and quoted. But unlike most books about leadership, self-awareness, and success, Leader by Choice provides the theories, or lessons you might find in the great works, in a relatable and edible way. He does so by giving his own account, using some fun, and at times very sad, thought provoking anecdotes. He is able to provide evidence of how these lessons have personally changed his life, in easy to understand steps, and how if you put the effort in, you can change yours, as well.
I would compare the tone and voice of this book to one of my favorites, Wild at Heart by John Eldredge, which the author mentions in this book.
This book is for someone who hasn’t realized they are their own worst enemy, or for someone who just needs a reminder. Even if you are successful, I challenge you to not learn something valuable from Andres Valdes.
Leader by Choice is a must read! Do yourself, or someone you care about, a favor and order the paperback version of this book.
