Overview

John Michael Montgomery didn't take the release of his career summary Greatest Hits as an opportunity to change direction and explore new musical territory. Instead, he continues with the slick contemporary country that made him his reputation. Often, Montgomery's ballads are indistinguishable from MOR pop, and his uptempo numbers a similarly clean and well-produced. When the material is subpar, this can all sound homogenous, and there are times on Leave a Mark where everything blends together. Still, Montgomery is a professional vocalist, and he delivers a handful of surefire hits, like "Love Working on You," which makes the album worthwhile for longterm fans, even if they suggest he'll have to work harder to ensure career longevity. ~ Thom Owens
