Description: This is the fourth edition of a comprehensive textbook of laboratory diagnosis of viral infections that was last updated in 1999.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a ready reference to assist with the laboratory diagnosis of viral infections.
Audience: This book is written for practicing laboratorians in diagnostic virology laboratories. It would be of interest to clinical laboratory scientists in training with a specialized interest in virology; pathology or laboratory medicine residents; fellows in medical microbiology training programs; medical students; pathologists in practice; and clinical infectious disease fellows or practitioners. It would also be of interest to anyone curious about how viral diagnoses are made. The authors and editors are widely recognized authorities in their respective fields.
Features: The preface justifies the need for a new edition because of the rapid pace of technology change. No kidding. Viral diagnostics has transitioned from historical and conventional culture, serological, or antigen detection methods to nucleic acid detection methods (amplification, microarray, sequencing, etc.), all of which are nicely covered in this book. The book itself is deceptively small, but boy, does it pack a wallop with its valuable information. Text is dense and figures are few. Of the 27 chapters, nine cover methods and techniques, one covers antivirals, and 17 cover clinical viral syndromes. The syndromic approach is unique to this edition and nicely reflects the natural clinical approach to differential diagnosis. Each syndromic chapter is embellished with in-depth information about candidate culprit viruses and diagnostic detection methods. Two chapters caught my interest - "Surgical Pathology and Diagnostic Cytology of Viral Infections" and "Laboratory Diagnosis in Resource-Limited Settings" — as crossdisciplinary information not normally found in standard clinical virology textbooks. My only minor negative comment: I would have liked more detailed discussion of antiviral susceptibility testing. Although this type of testing is covered individually in some syndrome-specific chapters (e.g., HIV, respiratory virus infections), it would have been nice to have some in-depth discussion in a centralized location (antiviral therapy chapter?) about the different and ideally preferred assays for detecting resistance to specific antivirals.
Assessment: This is a must-have book for laboratory virologists and the diagnostic molecular laboratory, given many of the diagnostic methods are molecular methods.
