Overview

First and foremost: this is not the music from the Bruce Weber documentary about Chet Baker called Let's Get Lost. Instead, this is music "inspired by the film." In other words, for those unsuspecting, this is music that is simply a rip-off. The music here could not be inspired by the film, since the music on this collection existed 40-plus years before the movie was ever made. There is no truth in advertising when it comes to record companies looking to make a fast buck on their catalog. Some of the songs from the film were originally issued in other incarnations -- nearly all of them in fact. That said, the junkie wash-out Chet Baker was at the end of his sorry life was not the same spry, good-looking Oklahoman youngster who made his mark in Los Angeles, either. These tunes were recorded for Bluebird and RCA Victor affiliated labels. They were cut in the '50s with Baker either as a leader or a sideman in the company of some true jazz greats like drummer Chico Hamilton, Gerry Mulligan, Kenny Drew, George Morrow, Zoot Sims, Shelly Manne, Paul Chambers, and others. There isn't anything wrong with the music here, but its contexts are so jumbled, the assemblage is just willy-nilly, and the masters aren't even good ones -- if these tracks were taken from tape at all. Avoid, avoid, avoid. There are so many excellent Baker collections out there, this is a poor place to start. The Pacific Jazz sides are better and readily available. The other reason to pass on these tunes is, if you are truly taken with the later junked out sound of Baker barely playing his horn and warbling, find the movie soundtrack. ~ Thom Jurek
