Overview

A state of mind, a moment, a feeling. Visualise it. Poetry can be the dinosaurs you shake hands with in your dreams, or the fears you conquer in your own jungle. It's endless, it's everyday, it lives in us and around us. Meaningful and different for every colour of eyes, for every pair of hands, wide open and vulnerable for all to read; relate. Take what you need; leave the rest behind. Your chapters don't define you – push forward and enjoy your ride. Let's start the year together, I support you. Our ropes can be tight, I promise. Let's be unbreakable and twine ourselves into the tightest knot. Our ropes will be tighter, together – soon.

About the Author

Chelsey; that’s my name. I am a gen Y Northern Ontario queer poet that has lived, suffered and experienced mental health, addiction and recovery at full force. As a young person, or any person really living with bipolar disorder or any sort of mental health illnesses, you find ways to escape. Whether it be at the playground, on the outdoor rink, with your music or at a soccer field; or alternatively with drugs and alcohol - you can find a way to disappear, to escape your reality - some escapes aren't necessarily the healthiest and it's important to recognize that. I’ve particularly always escaped with poetry, with words, letters, syllables that rhyme. But, I’ve also learnt to escape with endless drinking, drowning myself in white chardonnay from california, numbing my head with as much numbing agents as possible; reality. I know I’m not the only one that has difficulty saying out loud how I feel, how I struggle, how I love; sometimes that alone can be a chore - with poetry and words, this struggle seems easy, like my favourite hobby, a talent; lifestyle that I am choosing. A walk in my own park, a breath of love, of fresh air. Simplicity comes with patience I’ve learnt; like my poems come to define emotion; a feeling, a place or a state of mind. I will always be the addict, the queer, Chelsey; but I don’t struggle alone and that’s why I devoured myself and committed to this project. I think the neatest thing about poetry is that it’s fluid. Anyone can relate; we are all recovering, we are all escaping - we’ve all lost, loved and cracked at our seams. Be proud of those small milestones; the big ones I feel are yet to come.
