Dewey Slocum is a young man who wants nothing more than to work the family farm and someday marry the Jager girl who lives nearby. But when Dewey's father gets beaten and robbed, Dewey's hot-headed brother Darryl takes out after the thieves. Dewey's mother wants both boys at home, so she sends Dewey to bring his brother home. While Dewey is searching for his brother, he meets an African/Cherokee former slave who is trying to find her mother, who was sold to another slave owner before the end of the war.
