About the Author

Barbara J. Bain is an Australian haematologist. She is Professor of Diagnostic Haematology at the Imperial College London Faculty of Medicine and a consultant at St Mary’s Hospital, London. She is known as the author of reference textbooks in the field of haematology that form the core curriculum for laboratory morphology and pathology. She recently received an AM in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours and in 2018 a European Haematology Association Mentoring and Teaching Award.

Mike Leach is a haematologist with an interest in diagnostic haematopathology. He is a Consultant at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and Gartnavel Laboratory in Glasgow, UK. He is known for a series of textbooks in this field with a focus on haematology diagnosis and the application of flow cytometry.

This second edition text (1st edition, 1990) focuses on the diagnosis and classification of other major acute and chronic leukemias as well as the myelodystplastic syndromes. Correlation is made between morphology inside of cytochemistry with immunophenotype, karyotype, and molecular genetics. The author successfully attempts to illustrate and describe how the diagnosis of the major acute and chronic leukemias is established and how the diagnosis fits into the FAB classification. Given the rapidly expanding information regarding karyotype and molecular genetics, such correlation is not simply an important objective, but critical in our understanding of the natural history and treatment of these diseases. This text is written for individuals who are already relatively familiar with the field of acute and chronic leukemias. Fellows training in hematology and oncology, clinical laboratory technicians, and practicing hematologists and oncologists who care for patients with these diseases will find this text particularly useful. Dr. Bain single-handedly authored the text and she is well qualified to do so. One of the many strengths of this text is the crisp photographs of peripheral blood smears and bone marrow aspirates and biopsies. Numerous tables are clearly written and schematic representations of chromosomes and karyotypes that complement actual photographs of the karyotypes add considerably to the text.
