A 2023 AUDIOFILE EARPHONES AWARD WINNER

A murder has Seattle on edge, and it falls to a pacifist empath-and a notorious empath hunter-to find the killer before it's too late

It's the middle of the night when part-time police consultant and full-time empath Reece gets an anonymous call warning him that his detective sister needs his help. At an out-of-the-way Seattle marina, he discovers that three people have been butchered-including the author of the country's strictest anti-empathy bill, which is just days from being passed into law.

Soon, Reece's caller arrives: a shadowy government agent known as The Dead Man, who is rumored to deal exclusively in cases involving empathy. He immediately takes over the investigation, locking out both local PD and the FBI, but, strangely, keeps Reece by his side.*

As the two track an ever-growing trail of violence and destruction across Seattle, Reece must navigate a scared and angry city, an irritating attraction to his mysterious agent companion, and a rising fear that perhaps empaths like him aren't all flight and no fight after all...

MAY 2023 - AudioFile

Joel Leslie's stellar performance of nearly a dozen distinct voices shines in this fast-paced Seattle-based mystery. Reece is a pacifist empath who is disparaged for his ability to feel other people's emotions. His sister, Jamie, is a powerful detective with enhanced senses. When bodies start piling up around Seattle, a stoic figure named The Dead Man comes to town, bringing secrets about empathic abilities. Together, Reece, Jamie, and The Dead Man work to find the killer and uncover revelations about the supernatural power of empathic sibling relationships. Leslie brings a spot-on Southern drawl to The Dead Man's emotionless cadence, then seamlessly switches to Reece's higher-pitched impassioned voice. Leslie's vocal dexterity--combined with this unique take on the classic whodunit--makes this a must-listen. A.A.H. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine

An empath forms an uneasy alliance with a secretive special agent to solve a murder in this gripping paranormal series launch from Therin (the Magic in Manhattan series). In an alternate present-day Seattle, genetic mutation has given rise to empaths, rare humans who can read emotion through touch. Empath Reece Davies, younger brother to Det. Briony “Jamey” St. James and occasional police consultant, heads to the crime scene when he hears that antiempath Sen. Hannah Hathaway has been murdered—but as he arrives, he receives a cryptic text message from a man called Evan Grayson, telling him to run. Reece later learns that Grayson is the legendary “shadow agent” known as Dead Man. The men team up to investigate, with Reece’s biting sarcasm nicely playing off of Grayson’s gruff care. Therin leaves the attraction between these two on simmer throughout this installment; readers will need to tune in again to see the relationship truly take off. Meanwhile, Jamey funnels information to FBI agent Damian Nolan, as she’s unaware that he’s secretly working for a powerful antiempath company. Therin blends fascinating mythology with tight action sequences and shifting perspectives that keep tensions high. The result is a taut magical mystery that will get readers excited for the next in the series. Agent: Laura Zats, Headwater Literary. (Feb.)

From the Publisher

Reece is an appealing viewpoint character, and chapters from Jamey’s perspective are equally engaging. Evan and Reece’s chemistry crackles throughout Liar City’s nonstop action, but be warned that they do not exchange even one intimate touch. However, as this fantastic paranormal is the first installment in Therin’s Sugar & Vice series, hopes abound for the future.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review

"Evan and Reece’s chemistry crackles throughout Liar City’s nonstop action" —BookPage, starred review

"This promising series opener is packed with action, interesting metaphysical abilities, and a fully realized world with political divisions that feel relevant to the current political climate. The developing romance is likely too subtle for romance readers, but urban fantasy fans will be thrilled with the possibilities for future entries.”—Library Journal

“Therin conjures up an almost Twin Peaks literary vibe for the launch of her new Sugar & Vice series, which is set in an alternate version of contemporary Seattle. Pair this with the author’s flair for crafting captivating characters, as well as her ability to deliver fun, flirtatious bantering between Reece and Evan, and you have a paranormal-infused crime novel that will not only intrigue mystery readers but also offer some crossover appeal to fantasy and romance fans.”—Booklist

Therin (Proper Scoundrels) opens her new "Sugar & Vice" urban fantasy romance series in an alternate Seattle, where empaths and the safety of their abilities are the topic of national debate. Empath Reece, a devoted pacifist, occasionally consults with the police and his detective sister, but a recent murder brings a government agent and empath hunter, known as the Dead Man, into his path. A series of grisly murders somehow related to empathy has Reece and the Dead Man scouring Seattle to stop the killer, all while facing a fierce and growing opposition to empaths in general and Reece's involvement in the case specifically. Meanwhile, Reece feels a connection to the Dead Man, but is it safe to trust someone who's known for hunting his kind? VERDICT This promising series opener is packed with action, interesting metaphysical abilities, and a fully realized world with political divisions that feel relevant to the current political climate. The developing romance is likely too subtle for romance readers, but urban fantasy fans will be thrilled with the possibilities for future entries.—Meagan Day
