Overview

When Emma, a young English journalist, is required to babysit in a dark country house on the longest night of the year - the winter solstice, 21st December - she must confront both her fear of the dark and her unresolved grief for her much-loved late Great Aunt Sophie. Where will she find the courage she needs to avoid risking an even greater loss?

This single short story (c. 3000 words) will brighten the darkest night and offer comfort and hope as the days grow longer.

About the Author

I write warm, witty, feel-good contemporary fiction inspired by life in the English village where I have lived for nearly thirty years. My work has been shortlisted for the UK Bookbrunch Selfies Awards 2020, given for the best independently-published fiction in the UK.

My Sophie Sayers Village Mystery series begins with Best Murder in Show and, when complete, will run the course of a calendar year in the life of a classic English Cotswold village. The sixth, Murder Your Darlings, was published in the spring of 2020, and I am now writing the final book in the series, Murder, Lost and Found. A bonus eighth book is also in the pipeline!

I'm also writing a new romantic comedy mystery series set in the staffroom of an English girls' boarding school. St Bride's.  The first book, Secrets at St Bride's, was published in August 2019, and the second, Stranger at St Bride's, was published in July 2020. There will be six books in this series following the course of an academic year.

If you'd like me to let you know when I'm about to publish a new book, why not join my free Readers' Club? You'll find details on my author website. You'll also receive a free short ebook, The Pride of Peacocks, featuring Sophie Sayers and friends and introducing St Bride's School for Girls.
