Lilacs of Douglas Park is a touching memoir set in a fascinating 1940's Chicago setting, and follows a young girl named Lorrie who loves baseball. She is close with the sister she shares a bedroom with, has caring and compassionate parents, and their whole family is changed when her baby brother dies. Her mother then decides to join the workforce at a local knitting factory. Lorrie, age 9, also works in the factory making hats and gloves for the military during World War II.
The story also includes the other children and people in the neighborhood as they grow. On Lorries 17th birthday she is introduced to Sam, and young love is found.
