Overview

"Ich bin eifersüchtig auf das Porträt, das Sie von mir gemalt haben"

"I am jealous of the portrait you have painted of me"

Warum sollte mein Bild behalten, was ich verlieren muß?

"Why should my picture keep what I must lose?"

"Jeder Moment, der vergeht, nimmt mir etwas ab"

"Every moment that passes takes something from me"

"Und jeder Moment, der vergeht, gibt meinem Bild etwas"

"and every moment that passes gives something to my picture"

"Ach, wenn es nur umgekehrt wäre!"

"Oh, if it were only the other way!"

"Wenn sich das Bild ändern könnte und ich immer das sein könnte, was ich jetzt bin!"

"If the picture could change, and I could be always what I am now!"

"Warum hast du es gemalt?"

"Why did you paint it?"

"Eines Tages wird es mich verspotten - mich fürchterlich verspotten!"

"It will mock me some day-mock me horribly!"

Die heißen Tränen stiegen ihm in die Augen

The hot tears welled into his eyes

About the Author

About The Author

The ever-quotable Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish playwright, novelist, essayist, and poet who delighted Victorian England with his legendary wit. He found critical and popular success with his scintillating plays, chiefly The Importance of Being Earnest, while his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, scandalized readers. Imprisoned for two years for homosexual behavior, Wilde moved to France after his release, where he died destitute.
