About the Author

Michael Edmonds Consultant Physician at King’s College in London from 1981, founder and leader of Diabetic Foot Service and Clinic, including Emergency and Rapid Access Clinics at King’s College Hospital. The Foot Service has achieved and maintained a 50% reduction in major amputations. This standard was adopted by the World Health Organisation and International Diabetes Federation in the St Vincent Declaration 1989 to Improve the Outlook of Diabetic Patients. The King’s Diabetic Foot Clinic is widely accepted as an ideal model of care and has been duplicated in many Diabetic Clinics in UK, Europe, Asia and Africa. Description: This practical guide to lower limb preservation and salvage is nicely divided into four logical sections, making it easy for clinicians to use to help them understand and address the particulars of the at-risk diabetic limb that they are dealing with.
Purpose: The purpose is to emphasize that the diabetic foot is a highly complex entity and successful salvage requires an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary approach. Many books have been written on the diabetic foot. Few bring together as many perspectives and relevant points as this one does. An example of this is the early chapter on assessment that has excellent photography and detailed pictures, showing how to check for interdigital breakdown, a common but often overlooked area in the physical examination of the diabetic foot. This is just one example of the level of detail that this book goes into.
Audience: The audience is medical, surgical, rehabilitative, and nursing members of the diabetic limb salvage team, which is entirely appropriate. The book meets the needs of the audience, and the authors, both considered world experts, bring together more than 60 contributors from two highly respected interdisciplinary diabetic foot teams from King's College Hospital and Yale University School of Medicine.
Features: The book is clearly and concisely written. Illustrations and photography are excellent, and important for a book that deals with a highly visual subject. The 40 chapters are grouped into four main sections, with an introductory chapter on assessment and staging. The book has no glaring shortcomings, but given its multidisciplinary target audience, it would have been helpful to have included some information on nutrition, which could have nicely fitted into the chapter on the medical management of the infected diabetic foot. There also should have been more emphasis on the spectrum of sepsis and the importance of early recognition and medical management given that there have been changes in protocol for sepsis management on both sides of the Atlantic, and that this population is at significant risk for the development of sepsis.
Assessment: Overall, this is an excellent book. It hits the right points with the right emphasis. There is nothing exactly like this already out there in such a compact form. Certainly, Edmonds has produced a number of monographs, including Managing the Diabetic Foot, 3rd edition, Edmonds and Foster (Wiley-Blackwell, 2014), and A Practical Manual of Diabetic Foot Care, 2nd edition, Edmonds et al. (Blackwell Publishing, 2008), but these are not as in depth and are really aimed at different levels of audience. Probably the closest competitor is The Diabetic Foot: Medical and Surgical Management, 4th edition, Veves et al. (Springer, 2018), but it is physically bigger and less well illustrated in terms of clinical material. Edmonds and Sumpio are to be congratulated on this book's contribution to the literature on the diabetic foot and, since the incidence of the disease and its complications are unlikely to resolve any time soon, this book should be in demand. I suggest that all librarians consider carrying this book — it will be highly sought after!
