Overview

Livonia Preserved: Greenmead and Beyond tells the story of Greenmead and the Livonia Historical Village and other historic resources through photographs and other ephemera. The story begins with Livonia's earliest attempts to preserve its history at Quaker Acres, how it came into being, and the buildings that were moved to the site. These early efforts were expanded to a 100-acre farm complex-called Greenmead-acquired by the city in 1976. In addition to stories surrounding the Greenmead Historical Park, Livonia Preserved features other interesting structures and sites, such as Henry Ford's Newburg Mill, the Wilson Barn, the Felician Motherhouse, historic cemeteries, and private homes. Each of these represents a unique piece of Livonia history.

About the Author

Both authors of Livonia Preserved have been involved in historic preservation for many years. Suzanne Daniel has a master of elementary education degree from Eastern Michigan University and a master of library science degree from Wayne State University. For over 30 years, Daniel has put her love of history and talent for organizing information to great use in her involvement with the Livonia Historical Commission and the historical society in their work developing the historical village at Greenmead. Kathleen Glynn graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a master of historic preservation degree. She was president of the Livonia Historic Preservation Commission for many years and continues to play a very active role on the commission. She is a principal of Kosky, Glynn and Saborio LLC, a historic preservation consulting firm that has done extensive documentation of historic resources in southern Michigan. Glynn has been a volunteer at Greenmead for many years.

We used those pictorial books for the photographs and accompanying captions in the section. Published by Arcadia, the books are available for check out from all branches of the Livonia Public Library or for purchase for $20 each from Greenmead Historical Park in Livonia. We also used information from Footpaths to Freeways by Dominic P. Paris and Livonia Public Schools 1830-2002 by Martha A. Trafford for some of the stories. Those books are also available for check out from the library. Copies of Footpaths to Freeways are available for purchase at Greenmead at varying prices, depending on their condition and whether they are hard or soft cover. Many of the interesting "Did you know?" facts in the section came from Livonia Chronology complied by Suzanne Daniel, Harriet Larson and James Melosh.
