Overview

LoCash Cowboys have a proudly low-rent name and a cheap image that fits. Posing next to their car on an album cover that looks slapped together in Photoshop in about 14 minutes -- it's as cheap as a countrified No Limit -- the duo of Preston Brust and Chris Lucas swagger so much it seems that they're compensating for something, particularly on the opening "Hey Hey Hey," where they boast they're more country than you over a beat that never sounds country. Here, LoCash Cowboys seem a bit like a rowdier Big & Rich, stripped of their sense of camp and cleverness, but elsewhere on their 2013 eponymous debut, they simply pander to whatever they think sells. They get a little sweet and sensitive on the sunny "Chase a Little Love," sing a power ballad that sounds a little bit like Lionel Richie's "Sailing" ("Best Seat in the House"), and try to get trashy on "Little Miss CrazyHot," but wind up sounding just a little bit bubblegum. Strange thing is, for all their big-boned boasting on "Hey Hey Hey," "C.O.U.N.T.R.Y.," and "Independent Trucker" -- which features phoned-in vocals from George Jones on one of his last recorded appearances -- LoCash Cowboys don't sound all that big and macho. At their heart, they're Nashville lifers who have written hits for Keith Urban and Tim McGraw, songwriters who know how to peddle their wares, which may be why it's hard to shake the feeling that all the macho redneck bluster on LoCash Cowboys is nothing more than shtick. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
