Chapter One
Loni was a seven-year-old girl who had a huge imagination and sometimes liked to tell stories that weren't true. She told the stories because shve thought other kids and adults would like her more if she said she'd done something really extraordinary, or even something far too dangerous for a girl her age and size. Loni was a very petite young girl, but her spirit was large enough for a wild mustang roaming the great plains of America!
One day, Loni's mom moved them to Kansas, and Loni started a new school. Loni didn't know anyone and was eager to make new friends, so she made up her mind to impress the other kids by telling them she was the world's greatest tree climber.
So on the second day of school, Loni began her quest to make new friends. She told one girl, "Hey, do you want to see something really cool?"
The girl said, "Sure!"
So Loni ran over to a young oak tree that was smaller than the rest of the trees in the schoolyard. She kicked off her shoes and scrambled up the little oak tree. Then she said to the girl, "See? I'm the world's greatest tree climber!"
The girl said, "Wow, that was really cool! My name is Shelby, and I bet you can't climb that tree over there." She pointed to another tree in the schoolyard. "If you can, then you would truly be the world's greatest tree climber!"
Loni looked at the tree and said, "Okay! I'll climb it right now!" And up the tree she climbed. This tree was a little bit older than the first one and was a little bit taller too. But Loni had no problem getting up into the branches. Once she was up there, she found a place where she could sit down and be very comfortable.
Then a boy came over. He had seen Loni climb the tree, and he wanted to know what was going on. When he arrived under the tree, he asked Shelby, "Why is the new girl in that tree?"
Shelby said, "Because she says she is the world's greatest tree climber."
The boy shouted up to Loni, "Hi! I'm Wambli. If you really are the world's greatest tree climber, then you have to be able to climb that tree all the way to the top!"
Wambli pointed to a very tall tree that stood nearby. "And if you do, I will tell all of the kids here at our school that you are, in fact, the world's greatest tree climber and the coolest girl in this school!"
Loni came down from the tree. She thought for a moment about what her mom had told her that she should not tell stories to make friends because one day it would get her into a sticky situation. But she wanted new friends so badly! And Wambli had said she would be the coolest girl in the school if she climbed that tree. She just couldn't resist, so she agreed.
