Overview

Nicholas isn't happy—he wants to be a special kid. Thinking he has been born in the wrong time and place, he yearns to be a handsome prince or powerful king . . . or maybe a pirate on the high waters! One day a huge genie appears and grants Nicholas three wishes. Even though the genie won't give him the happiness that he wants so badly, Nicholas realizes that what he really wants is something he already has.

PreS-Gr 2Young Nicolás is not happy with his normal, boring life. He wishes he were a prince, a pirate, or an acrobat in a traveling circus. He dreams of these alternative lives constantly: in school, at the park with his dad, and at night while his mom reads to him. One evening, when Nicolás opens a can of soda, a genie appears and offers to grant him three wishes. The youngster makes his first wish right away: to be a prince. He is transported to a large palace filled with servants, but when he discovers that his parents are not there, he goes for the second wish: to join the circus. When that doesn’t go exactly as planned, he thinks about his third wish very carefully. This sweet, well-written story is accompanied by fun, watercolor illustrations that capture the protagonist’s mixed feelings. The theme of a child leaving home and then wanting to return is a universal one, and youngsters will have no trouble relating to Nicolás and his dreams of adventure. Recommended for all libraries.
