Overview

One thing about experiments -- they don't always succeed. This combination of singer Marta Sebestyen (actually one of three singers on here, along with the far lesser-known Judit Lovas and Levente Szoerenyi) with producer/musician Karoly Cserepes is adventurous for its time (1985). And it does result in odd moments of beauty -- a flute line here, her vocals on the eight tracks where she's heard -- but it's the synthesizer that has the main voice, both in clunky rhythms and just plain strange instrumental lines. Not only does it feel out of place, reducing to metronome time a music where elasticity is to be treasured, but its programmed sounds are simply alien to the style of music. However, it's interesting that the remixes of two tracks, "Love, Love" and "Spring, Spring," both reworked in 1996, fare much better, as improved studio technology offers more freedom. But even then, there's very little to work with, so good becomes, at best, relative. Don't be fooled by the name on the cover -- this isn't really a Marta Sebestyen album at all. And unless you're a true completist, best to save your money. ~ Chris Nickson
