Overview

From the New York Times best-selling creators of Library Lion comes a warm (and delightfully fuzzy) storybook about learning to be—and be loved for—exactly who you are.

On a street of old houses, a big hairy spider is searching for a home with dark corners to hide in. But when he wakes up, he finds a hand reaching for him and a lady proclaiming that she has always wanted a kitten—and will name him Luigi! At first, a somewhat puzzled Luigi, used to being left alone to creep and dangle and spin webs, resists her kind advances. But soon, tasty breakfasts and getting tucked into bed (no one’s ever wished him good night before) have him thinking that kittens surely live magical lives. I will be a kitten! he decides. But how long can he keep up his facade, and what might be at stake in pretending to be someone you’re not? The award-winning duo behind Library Lion delivers another classic in the making, marked by humor and depth, endearing characters, and the assurance that the right people will accept and adore us, unconditionally, just as we are.

About Me
I grew up in Staten Island, New York. Our family was small—I didn't have any brothers or sisters—but I was lucky to have some great friends who were just like family to me. (They still are!) Today I live in Brooklyn, New York, with my wonderful husband, two amazing stepdaughters, and two very silly cats.

Some of my favorite things to do are reading (especially science fiction and fantasy), taking long walks in Prospect Park, playing D&D and video games, and watching the Rangers play hockey at Madison Square Garden. I also love going to Broadway shows with my two best friends. Once upon a time I used to perform in a lot of (amateur) musical theater, mostly in high school and college and then later in community theater productions of Gilbert&Sullivan operettas. These days I don't have enough free time to go to rehearsals, so most of my singing happens at karaoke or at home with my family while my husband plays guitar. But I hope to go back to being in shows someday!

I keep trying to become a knitter but it's a slow process. I'm very good at buying yarn and starting projects—not so good at finishing them!

About My Work
I'm the author of more than fifty books for children and young adults, including the New York Times best-selling picture book Library Lion (which Time magazine named as one of the 100 Best Children's Books of All Time!).

I love writing all kinds of things for readers of all ages. My books so far include board books, coloring and activity books, early readers, chapter books, middle-grade novels, and young adult novels. I also sometimes write short stories, including short speculative fiction for older readers. I rarely write totally realistic fiction; my favorite things to write about are those that can't happen in the regular, everyday world. I love writing about magic and dragons and monsters and adventure. My stories are also often about true friendship and loyalty and love. I try to write characters that you would want to be friends with in real life.

Three Things You Might Not Know About Me
1. My favorite band is My Chemical Romance.

2. When I was little I wanted to be either an animal trainer (specifically of big cats like black panthers and snow leopards) or a country singer like Dolly Parton.

3. I'm scared of spiders, but I love snakes.

About Me:
I grew up in a pretty creative family. I have three brothers and one sister. There was a lot of music in our house, as well as books and homemade projects like toothpick sculptures, paper-mâché pinatas, and wooden models. We spent a lot of time outdoors. Wherever we lived, my siblings and I went exploring. We built tree forts and hideouts. I loved watching animals, insects, and turtles.

I moved a lot when I was little and have lived in Europe and many parts of the United States. Europe left a huge impression on me. Climbing winding staircases in castle towers and exploring ancient forests gave me a sense of history and adventure.

In school, I was that quiet kid who liked to read. In the third grade I fell in love with chapter books like Freddy the Detective, The Borrowers, and The Great Brain. My parents loved books, too, and I liked being read to almost more than anything else. I also drew a lot. I liked to draw spaceships, race cars, castles, and monsters. I didn’t like to draw cats or bicycles. A cat riding a bicycle is still a hard thing for me to draw!
Today I live in Southern Maine with my wife and children. Our family loves to make things, and there are lots of projects going on all the time. Wood carving, weaving, sewing, gardening, and blacksmithing are all skills that inspire me.

About My Work:
Becoming an illustrator seemed like the way to combine reading and drawing. Bringing stories to life is so exciting! My illustrations come mostly from my imagination. I love to paint brilliant blue skies and use unusual perspectives.

Using my sense of humor to make kids and adults smile makes me happy. I love the idea of my books being read to children at bedtime. Books are such a peaceful end to sometimes hectic days.

Three Things About Me:
1) I don’t think I have ever fallen asleep during a movie.
2) My bicycle has thick tires and a wire basket on the front big enough to hold a bag of groceries.
3) I have a dog who eats socks.
