Overview

The operas of Jean-Baptiste Lully, so entwined with the rituals of the French court in the 17th century, can be a tough slog for modern audiences. However, if any recording is going to get Lully a general fandom, it is this one by Les Talens Lyriques, director Christoph Rousset, and a collection of French singers. For one thing, the three-act opera is peppier than most of Lully's works, written not for the court but for a private commission and featuring an action-packed plot with a sea nymph heroine and a jealous cyclops who kills the shepherd hero with a rock (not to worry, he is brought back to life as a river). There are few recitatives, and where they do occur, they are often prefaced by instrumental tunes, which Rousset imbues with a good deal of energy. The sound is excellent, with strong text intelligibility not only from the two sets of singers (there is a Prologue with different characters, but it is so packed with good tunes one doesn't mind the idea) but also from the chorus. Physical album buyers will get a lush booklet with the full text in French and English. Rousset's orchestra has played a lot of Lully, and the players can follow him when he demands brisk tempos and deliver a meltingly sweet tone in the romantic numbers. The performance is engaging from start to finish, and the album can be heartily recommended to anyone wanting to try Lully at his best. ~ James Manheim
